MODERN HYMNS AND POETRY FOR AGATHOS DAIMON

Agathos Daimon
by Phillupus

I sing the serpent of Alexandria,
the protective force that binds cities,

that gives fortune to humans, houses
sanctuary, health to animals and children.

Go with us when we depart,
welcome us on our return.

Even to the depths and darkness
where arms and fingers cannot reach

may you slither and seek out
that which could harm, and swallow

all malign forces, hidden and open,
in earth and sea and heaven.

For you, fires are lit, fragrances offered,
and may the honey of existence

be sweeter for us who share it
with you, O helpful spirit!

Agathos Daimon Hymn
by Astalon

Oh Gods, what beings among the Divinities are closest to men? What divine beings watch closely over men, never turning away? What noble beings gently counsel men towards good? What blessed beings petitions on behalf of the welfare of individuals to the Gods? What Stronger Ones follow and live among men, always keeping the welfare of men in their hearts?

They are the Agathos Daimons, the Good Spirits, the Blessed Daimons whose numbers are innumerate. Blessed be these spirits for they care for men. At the moment of birth every men and women is chosen by one of the Good Daimons who in delight cradles the person in their arms. From that moment on these Hardworking and Diligent Daimons watches over the individual, gently steering them towards good. These brave Daimons in whatever capacity they are able stand against the Kakos Daemons who seek only malignancy on their ward. These eloquent daemons petitions for the intervention of the Gods when Nemesis cast Her eyes over their ward. These daimons carries the prayer and wishes of men to the Gods, adding their own sweet words so that the Gods may look favorably upon their ward. Oh blessed be the Beneficient Spirits, most worthy of praise.

The Agathos Daimons whose numbers are innumerate concerns themselves as well in the goodness  and personal development of men. They make men worthy. They gently nudge and guide men so that they may better themselves. They challenge them with task so that men may learn to become better. They drop upon humans questions so that they may gain wisdom. They petition to the Kharites to draw near unto their ward so that their ward may learn grace, kindness and beauty, They call the Virtues to befriend their wards so that their wards may become virtuous. They call upon various Theois and Daemons to enter their wards life so that they may grow and thrive. Truly do the Agathos Daimons watch over the goodness of men.

The Agathos Daimons whose numbers are innumerate are also the truest companion of men. They are always around, never abandoning men. Even when men is at his lowest the Agathos Daimon is always by his side, calling upon Elpis to fan her gentle wings of hope upon men. When men runs out of luck the Good Spirit clutches the feet of Good Tykhe begging for her to look kindly upon their ward. When men is in danger the Agathos Daimon coils himself around men, making himself a shield against danger. When a men is about to enter the house of Hades the Agathos Daimon brings his ward to Hermes Kthonious and Hekate Kthonious and follows his ward down into the House of Hades. There the Agathos Daimon would speak sweet words to Hades and Persephone, petitioning for the welfare of his ward in the Underworld.

So hail to the Agathos Daimons, most praiseworthy and beneficient of spirits. I above all thank you my personal daimon, the Good Daimon who watches over me. To you I offer this offering of wine/coffee/tea/chocolate drink/beer/barley/rice/fruit/cake. Truly do I thank you for everything you have done Good One.

Prayer to the Agathos Daimon for Aid
by Amanda Blake

To the Agathos Daimon I pray
The snake-formed domestic spirit
Who came to the Makedonian King
Alexander the Great
In a dream under cover of night
O protector of Alexandria, hear me!
Guardian of the Home, I pray to you now.
Help me in my hour of need.
As my food stores near empty
As enemies and thieves assail my lands
As I am bound in a fearful situation
I pray for the protection and wellbeing of me and mine
I offer to you, O snakey spirit, servant of Zeus
Warm milk mixed with honey
And sweet frankincense burning to the sky
Encircle my home
And let none who will do me harm enter
Nor step onto my lands
Protect me
See to it that my family is safe and happy
And will remain so
And I will sing for you another song.
